What is AirWatch?
AirWatch was founded in 2003 and in 2014, acquired by VMware and subsequently, being integrated as one of the pillar of product under the umbrella of VMware's Workspace One UEM service offerings.
AirWatch is VMware's Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) solution to centralizes the management, configuration and security of all devices in an organization, both BYOD and corporate-owned.
As an EMM solution, it includes functionalities for mobile device management (MDM), mobile application management (MAM), mobile content management (MCM), identity management for access control, and productivity apps for easy access to corporate email, calendar, contacts, content repositories and intranet sites.

My thoughts...
From my past experiences of managing AirWatch projects, it is obvious that SaaS deployment do brings a lot of benefits in terms of ease of deployment, hassle-free maintenance and upgrading of environment. It's a much shorter lead time for deployment as well, typically between 2 - 3 weeks. For On-premise deployment, there are lot's of pre-requisite checks to perform, which are often tedious. Not to mention procurement of equipment and setup of the infrastructure.
